Janjgir-Champa: In a case that shook the conscience of the community, the Janjgir-Champa court has sentenced a stepfather to life imprisonment for the rape of a 2-year-old girl. The verdict comes eight months after the incident, following relentless efforts by citizens and social activists, most notably Swami Surendranath, whose early intervention and public protest helped bring swift attention to the case.
Protest That Sparked Action
The heinous crime occurred on 19 October 2024, and
upon learning of it, Swami Surendranath—a well-known social reformer and
ascetic—was deeply disturbed. Just two days later, on 21 October, he
organized a candlelight march in Janjgir-Champa to voice outrage and
demand immediate action. The march saw participation from numerous respected
citizens and brought significant media and administrative attention to the
case.
Speaking with Growing India's Chhattisgarh head Kulwant
Singh Saluja, Swami Surendranath expressed his concern over the growing
moral decay in society and the increasing incidents of atrocities against the
innocent. “It is the duty of awakened individuals to stir the conscience of a
sleeping society,” he stated.
Swami Surendranath not only led the protest but also
extended financial assistance of ₹1 lakh for the medical treatment of
the survivor, urging citizens to stand united against such inhuman acts.
Court Verdict Sends Strong Message
After an eight-month trial, Additional Sessions Judge
(POCSO) Anil Kumar Bara pronounced a life sentence to the accused
stepfather. The ruling was welcomed across the district and seen as a victory
for justice and public unity.
Swami Surendranath, reacting to the verdict, said, “The
purpose of the candle march was to alert the administration and demand quick
and strict action. Today, the judgment has not only delivered justice to the
victim but also sent a strong message to society—such acts will not be
tolerated, and perpetrators will be punished severely.”
A Call for Vigilance and Awareness
This case stands as an example of how public awareness,
prompt action, and social unity can drive justice, even in the darkest of
crimes. Swami Surendranath emphasized that raising one’s voice against
injustice is the highest form of social duty, especially in times when
moral values are rapidly eroding.
