Kajol on ‘Maa’: “World’s First Mythological Horror Film”; Says Climax Left Her Speechless, Shares Yug & Nysa’s Reactions

After a five-year hiatus from the big screen, actress Kajol is set to make a powerful comeback with ‘Maa’, a film she calls the world’s first mythological horror. Blending Indian mythology with supernatural elements, ‘Maa’ is all set to hit theatres this month, and Kajol has already begun promoting the much-anticipated film.

In a candid conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, Kajol opened up about the film’s unique concept, her spiritual journey during its making, and her children’s reaction to the trailer.

"‘Maa’ is Not Just a Film—It’s an Emotion"

Speaking about what the title means to her, Kajol said, “The first word we utter in joy or pain is ‘Maa’. Whether it’s our mother, the goddess, or a moment of vulnerability—this word has layers of emotion, faith, and strength.”

A New Genre, A Bold Step

While audiences have seen Kajol in a variety of roles—romantic, dramatic, and comedic—‘Maa’ marks her first foray into the horror genre. Explaining the delay in taking up such a role, she said, “This is not just India’s but the world’s first mythological horror film. The story is based on Raktbeej and Maa Kali. The concept was so powerful, I couldn’t say no.”

She added that the film didn’t begin as a horror project. “Initially, we didn’t label it as horror. But as the story evolved, we realized it had the emotional depth and energy that needed a strong genre label like horror.”

A Spiritual Connection

Interestingly, Kajol shared a spiritual calling she experienced just before signing the film. “In January, I felt drawn to visit Kamakhya and Dakshineswar temples. Though my schedule didn’t allow it, soon after, I received a call for this film. I don’t believe in coincidences. I truly felt that Maa’s hand was guiding me.”

She added, “The film moved from concept to completion in under a year. That’s rare in our industry. It felt like divine alignment.”

Emotionally and Physically Demanding

The actress revealed that ‘Maa’ challenged her in ways no film had before. “This film pushed me emotionally and physically. There’s intense action, and much of it goes beyond just acting—it demanded real conviction.”

Villain and Climax—Kept Under Wraps

While she avoided revealing the antagonist, Kajol teased the audience, “You’ll have to watch the film to know who the villain is. It’s not just a demon or monster. It’s a battle between faith and fear.”

Recalling a profound moment on set, she shared, “Shooting the climax left me shaken. I sat silently for a minute. It felt... strange. When you watch it, you’ll understand why.”

Yug & Nysa’s Reactions

Her children haven’t seen the full film yet, but their reactions to the trailer were heartening. “Yug loved the trailer. He said he would go crazy when the film releases!” she laughed.

A Promise from ‘Maa’ Herself

In her message to the audience, Kajol said, “We’ve poured our hearts into this film. Go to the cinema and watch it—not just for me, but for the story. And yes, you have a mother’s promise!”

‘Maa’ releases in theatres this month. With mythology, horror, and emotion intertwined, Kajol’s return promises to be both powerful and unforgettable.
