New Delhi — Bollywood star and entrepreneur Katrina Kaif has been named the Global Brand Ambassador for Visit Maldives, signaling a strategic tourism push ahead of a potential visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July.
Expressing her excitement, Kaif said, “The Maldives represents the pinnacle of luxury and natural beauty. I'm honored to be the face of 'The Sunny Side of Life' and help global travelers discover its charm.”
The move comes months after a diplomatic row between India and the Maldives, when Maldivian officials made offensive comments about PM Modi following his promotion of Lakshadweep as a tourism spot. The backlash led to calls for a boycott of the Maldives by Indian tourists.
Fans reacted with mixed feelings. While many welcomed the collaboration, some questioned why a Maldivian wasn't chosen for the ambassador role.
Meanwhile, diplomatic ties appear to be improving. PM Modi is reportedly considering a July 26 visit, coinciding with Maldives' Independence Day, after an invitation from President Mohamed Muizzu was reiterated by the Maldivian Foreign Minister.
