According to the police, the incident began on Wednesday night when Umashankar Nishad, a resident of Benia Tola in the Rajpur Khas area under Sevarahi police station limits, was returning home from the market. He was intercepted by six individuals, including Prince Munna Nishad, Nathu (son of Gosai Nishad), and Munna (son of Nathu Nishad). The group allegedly beat him and tried to snatch his motorcycle and mobile phone. Umashankar, though injured, managed to hold on to his belongings and escape to his home.
The next morning, his elder brother, Jagu Nishad (40), went to Prince’s house to ask why his brother had been assaulted. While he was inquiring about the incident, Prince allegedly emerged with a knife and attacked Jagu in front of several people. He sustained multiple stab wounds and collapsed on the spot.
Family members rushed him to the government hospital in Sevarahi, but he succumbed to his injuries en route. Doctors at the hospital declared him dead on arrival.
Tensions flared following the murder. Enraged villagers and family members carried the body to the accused’s residence and began protesting. A large crowd surrounded the house, raising fears of potential violence.
However, the police responded swiftly. Sevarahi Station Officer (SO) alerted Circle Officer (CO) of Tamkuhi Raj, Rakesh Pratap Singh, who deployed forces from four nearby police stations to the scene. The police successfully evacuated all members of the accused’s family, including women and children, and escorted them to safety at the local police station. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Investment Katiyar also reached the site to manage the situation.
The body was sent for post-mortem examination, and a case is being registered based on the complaint (tahrir) filed by the victim’s family.
Speaking to the media, CO Rakesh Pratap Singh said the immediate relocation of the accused’s family and initiation of legal proceedings helped defuse tensions and restore peace in the village.
