Mumbai Train Tragedy: Four Dead, Several Injured After Falling Off Overcrowded Local Train Near Mumbra

Mumbai, June 9, 2025 — In a tragic incident, four passengers lost their lives and at least nine others were injured after falling off a crowded local train near Mumbra railway station, en route to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on Monday morning.

According to initial reports, the mishap occurred around 9:50 AM on the down fast line between Mumbra and Diva stations, when passengers hanging on the footboard of a Kasara-CSMT fast local reportedly lost balance after bags collided. The sudden jolt caused around 13 people to fall onto the tracks, resulting in multiple casualties.

Railway Response and Safety Measures

The Railway Police and Central Railway officials rushed to the spot, and the injured were immediately taken to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa. Two critically injured individuals have been shifted to Jupiter Hospital in Thane for advanced treatment.

In response to the accident, Central Railway PRO Dr. Swapnil Nila confirmed that new local train coaches under production will be equipped with automatic door-closing systems. Additionally, the existing Mumbai Suburban rakes will undergo retrofitting to include this safety feature.

Leaders Demand Accountability

The tragedy has triggered a political storm, with Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske demanding a detailed probe. “How did the passengers fall? Was there a scuffle, overcrowding, or negligence?” he asked, speaking to a regional news channel.

Leader of Opposition Ambadas Danve described the incident as “heartbreaking” and raised serious concerns about railway safety standards in Mumbai.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief, calling the incident “unfortunate”. He confirmed that the injured are receiving treatment at Shivaji Hospital and Thane General Hospital.

Railway Passengers Association Raises Alarms

The Mumbai Railway Passengers Association (MRPA) has slammed the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), claiming repeated complaints about the Diva-Kalwa route have gone unheeded.

“Despite the addition of two new lines between Kalyan and Thane, local services were reduced to give priority to mail and express trains,” the association stated, emphasizing that multiple fatalities have occurred on this dangerous stretch in the past.

Call for Urgent Railway Safety Reforms

The accident has reignited public outrage over the infrastructure challenges and crowd mismanagement in Mumbai’s suburban train network — often referred to as the lifeline of the city. With increasing demand and limited upgrades, experts are calling for rapid modernization, enhanced safety protocols, and prioritization of local trains over long-distance express services on key commuter routes.
