Shooter Kills 9 in Austrian School Before Taking Own Life: Graz Incident Sparks National Shock
June 10, 2025 | Graz, Austria
A tragic mass shooting rocked the Austrian city of Graz on Tuesday morning, claiming the lives of nine individuals—mostly students—before the suspected gunman took his own life, according to Reuters.

The incident occurred around 10 a.m. local time at a high school in Graz, Austria’s second-largest city. The 21-year-old attacker, believed to be a student of the same school, opened fire inside the building, leaving several others seriously injured, including both students and teachers.
Massive Police Operation Underway

Local authorities launched a large-scale response, deploying Austria’s elite Cobra Special Forces, regular police units, and even a helicopter for aerial surveillance. Police spokesperson Sabri Yorgun confirmed that investigations are ongoing and the exact number of fatalities and injuries is still being verified.

“The situation is extremely serious. Our priority is to ensure safety and determine the motive behind the attack,” Yorgun said.

The Austrian Interior Ministry has refrained from confirming final casualty figures but emphasized that the situation remains critical. The school and its surrounding areas have been completely cordoned off, and residents have been urged to remain calm and avoid spreading rumors.
Attacker Believed to Be a Student

Preliminary reports from Austrian state media ORF and BBC suggest that the shooter may have been a student enrolled in the school. After carrying out the deadly attack, he reportedly shot himself. His body was later found inside the school premises.
National and International Reactions

Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker has traveled to Graz and is expected to hold a press conference addressing the nation. Meanwhile, EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas expressed her condolences, stating:

"Every child should feel safe in school and should be able to learn free from fear and violence. My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the Austrian people at this tragic time."
School Shootings in Europe: Still Rare but Rising

While school shootings remain rare in Europe compared to the United States, the continent has witnessed a few non-terrorism-related attacks in recent years that have raised serious concerns about youth mental health and school security.

Graz, home to nearly 300,000 residents, is located in southeastern Austria and is known for its universities, historical sites, and peaceful environment—making this shooting even more shocking for the nation and international community.
