Stray Dog Carries Newborn’s Body at Mhow Hospital in Madhya Pradesh; Investigation Underway

Mhow, Madhya Pradesh – A disturbing incident unfolded early Saturday morning at the civil hospital in Mhow, where a stray dog was seen carrying a dead newborn in its jaws near the hospital’s toilet area. The incident has prompted a police investigation, officials confirmed.

According to hospital authorities, a security guard retrieved the newborn’s body after shooing the dog away. The hospital is located about 25 kilometers from the district headquarters in Indore. Sources revealed that the infant’s body had been partially eaten by dogs.

Dr. H.R. Verma, the in-charge of Mhow civil hospital, shared details based on CCTV footage, stating the incident occurred between 1:30 a.m. and 2 a.m. A young girl, aged 17, was seen entering the toilet during this time. She had been admitted to the hospital the previous night, around 9 p.m., complaining of colic. Authorities suspect she gave birth inside the toilet. The girl left the hospital soon after, accompanied by an unidentified man.

“We conducted a post-mortem on Saturday morning. Preliminary findings indicate the delivery was premature. The body has been kept in the mortuary, and the report is awaited,” Dr. Verma said. “We will provide all CCTV footage to the police to assist in their investigation.”

Hospital officials revealed that three entry points to the hospital remain open at night, allowing stray dogs to enter through a gate near the store room. Following this incident, Dr. Verma ordered all gates to be locked at night, with security personnel stationed at the main gate to monitor visitors and keep stray animals away.

Mhow police station in-charge Rahul Sharma confirmed a probe has been initiated. “The hospital has shared the CCTV footage and details provided by the girl during admission. We are investigating the matter thoroughly,” he said.

This tragic incident comes just four days after a pack of stray dogs reportedly killed a four-year-old boy on Suwasra-Runija road in Mandsaur district, also in Madhya Pradesh, raising concerns about stray animal control in the region.
