Following the tragic stampede incident during Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) IPL victory celebration in Bengaluru earlier this month, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to hold an Apex Council meeting on June 14 to formulate new guidelines for post-match and title celebrations.
After RCB clinched their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title, a massive crowd — estimated at nearly three lakh people — gathered near M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Unfortunately, the celebration turned tragic as a stampede broke out, leading to the deaths of 11 individuals and injuries to dozens more.
In response, Karnataka Police filed an FIR against RCB and the Karnataka State Cricket Association for organizing the event without necessary permissions.
According to ANI, the BCCI will convene virtually for the Apex Council meeting to discuss and establish new norms for team celebrations, with a focus on safety and crowd control. A BCCI source told PTI, “The need for formal guidelines for IPL victory celebrations will be discussed during the meeting.”
Meanwhile, the Karnataka state government has held both RCB and BCCI accountable, claiming that no official permissions were obtained and that social media was used to invite a massive crowd, creating uncontrollable conditions.
During a High Court hearing, RCB's Marketing Head Nikhil Sosale and four others challenged their arrests, arguing they were being singled out while police present at the scene faced no action. The case is currently under judicial review.
