India is uniquely positioned to emerge as a global economic powerhouse and is on track to surpass Germany to become the world’s third-largest economy, said Pratik Mathur, India’s Consul General in Shanghai.
Speaking at the annual Consul Generals and CEOs Business Forum in Shanghai on Friday, Mathur highlighted India’s demographic advantages, robust reforms, and aspirations to lead in the next wave of global economic transformation.
“It’s a great time to be in Asia, especially India,” he said, addressing a gathering of business leaders and diplomats. “We are the world’s largest and fastest-growing democracy, with a young, educated, and consumption-driven population.”
He emphasized that India's economic trajectory is backed by structural reforms such as the 'Make in India' initiative, digital infrastructure growth, and innovation in artificial intelligence.
Currently valued at around $4 trillion, India’s GDP is projected to grow nearly eightfold to $30 trillion by the year 2047 — coinciding with 100 years of Indian independence. According to Mathur, this long-term projection is not only achievable but is being actively shaped by favorable government policies and private sector enthusiasm.
“India is being positioned as a global manufacturing hub, and our growing middle class is set to drive sustained consumption in the coming decades,” he added.
The speech, later published on the official website of the Indian Consulate in Shanghai, underscores New Delhi’s confidence in its economic future and its appeal to global investors seeking growth markets in the post-pandemic world.
