India’s undergraduate education landscape is undergoing a major shift, fueled by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Top-tier institutes like IITs and IIMs are now rolling out new interdisciplinary programs to meet emerging industry demands, with data science and public policy among the fastest-growing fields.
According to the British Council’s 2024 report, nearly 79%
of India’s population completes education up to the undergraduate level.
Meanwhile, a NASSCOM report reveals that demand for jobs in data science
is increasing by 30% annually. By 2026, the need for machine learning
engineers and data architects is expected to cross one million.
In response to this trend, several prestigious institutions
have launched innovative programs.
- IIT
Madras has introduced an online B.Sc. in Data Science.
- IIT
Mandi offers new undergraduate degrees in General Engineering and
Computing.
- Delhi
University’s School of Open Learning has begun B.A. Honours
programs through distance education.
- IIM
Sambalpur now offers undergraduate courses in Data Science and AI,
as well as in Management and Public Policy.
These programs align with NEP 2020’s emphasis on industry-relevant
skills, flexible learning, and multi-exit options — allowing
students to earn certifications, diplomas, or full honours degrees. They also
focus on practical exposure through internships and projects.
Building Foundations for the Future
These courses not only prepare students for careers but also
form a solid base for advanced studies in MBA, M.S., Ph.D., or Masters in
Public Policy. Institutes like IIM Sambalpur aim to go beyond traditional
degrees by nurturing future-ready leaders, analysts, and policymakers.
This evolution marks a crucial step in India’s education
reform — one that centers on digital technology, policy innovation,
and human capital development. It reflects a shift from conventional
rote learning to dynamic, outcome-oriented education, equipping students
for a knowledge-driven global economy.
