Imphal, June 8, 2025:
Widespread protests erupted across Imphal on Saturday evening after reports emerged of the alleged detention of a leader from the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol. In response to the escalating unrest, the Manipur government suspended internet services in five central valley districts and imposed a total curfew in Bishnupur district.
Protesters took to the streets in parts of Imphal city, including Tiddim Road and Uripok in Imphal West district, where they blocked roads and burned tyres, demanding the immediate release of the detained leader. Clashes between security personnel and demonstrators at Kwakeithel, the site of the alleged detention, reportedly left multiple individuals injured.
Internet Suspension Across Five Districts
In the early hours of Sunday, the Manipur Home Department suspended internet, mobile data, VPN, and VSAT services in Imphal East, Imphal West, Kakching, Thoubal, and Bishnupur districts for five days. The decision, taken by Home Commissioner N. Ashok Kumar, was aimed at preventing the misuse of social media platforms for circulating provocative content that could incite violence.
“There is apprehension that some anti-social elements might use social media extensively for the transmission of images, hate speech, and video messages inciting passions among the public, potentially disrupting law and order,” the official order stated.
Prohibitory Orders and Curfew Enforced
Alongside the internet shutdown, the government has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in all valley districts, citing concerns over possible disturbances to public peace and safety.
A complete curfew was declared in Bishnupur district, effective from 11 PM on June 7, in a bid to contain the unrest and prevent further escalation.
Background and Ongoing Situation
The detained individual is reportedly a leader of Arambai Tenggol, a prominent Meitei group. As of now, authorities have not issued a formal statement regarding the reasons for his detention. However, sources suggest that the action was part of a broader security measure amid rising tensions in the region.
Law enforcement agencies remain on high alert, and additional forces have been deployed to maintain order across Imphal and surrounding districts.
