Supreme Court Criticizes Karnataka Over 'Thug Life' Ban Threats: "Mob Can't Decide What Films Release"

New Delhi | June 17, 2025 — The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday delivered a strong rebuke to the Karnataka government over the controversy surrounding the Tamil film “Thug Life”, starring veteran actor and politician Kamal Haasan. The court condemned attempts by certain groups to block the film’s release in the state, following Haasan’s controversial linguistic remark that "Kannada was born from Tamil."

Court Warns Against Mob Rule, Upholds Artistic Freedom

Issuing a clear message, the Supreme Court stated that "the rule of law cannot be held hostage to mob threats", emphasizing that hooligan groups have no authority to decide whether or not a film should be shown in theatres.

The bench stressed that threats of violence, including burning down cinemas, are unacceptable in a democratic society. It maintained that disagreement with an individual’s views must be expressed within legal and peaceful boundaries. The court also encouraged educated citizens to counter views they disagree with through dialogue and reasoned statements — not intimidation.

Karnataka High Court Earlier Slammed Haasan's Remarks

The controversy escalated after Kamal Haasan’s alleged statement at an event — claiming that “Kannada was born out of Tamil” — went viral on social media and sparked a political uproar. Both the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP in Karnataka condemned the statement, uniting across party lines.

  • CM Siddaramaiah referred to Haasan dismissively as "poor Kamal Haasan."

  • Opposition Leader R. Ashoka went a step further, calling him a "mental patient."

The Karnataka High Court, while hearing a plea seeking protection for the release of Thug Life, also questioned Haasan's refusal to issue an apology. Justice M. Nagaprasanna raised concerns about his "credentials" to make such a linguistic claim.

Kamal Haasan Responds: 'Remarks Misinterpreted'

In response, Kamal Haasan wrote to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), asserting that his remarks during the audio launch of 'Thug Life' were misinterpreted. He expressed deep respect for Kannada culture and clarified his intent. However, due to the escalating tensions, Haasan has decided to withhold the film’s release in Karnataka for the time being.

Wider Debate on Language, Identity, and Cultural Sensitivity

The row has ignited a larger conversation around linguistic heritage, identity, and cultural pride. Several pro-Kannada organizations have issued warnings to block screenings of Kamal Haasan's future films in the state unless an apology is tendered.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court's intervention is being seen as a landmark stand for artistic freedom and a warning against mob-driven censorship.
