Calgary/Kananaskis, Canada | June 17, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Canada on Sunday to attend the G7 Summit, marking his first visit to the country in a decade. The visit, however, drew mixed reactions on the ground as both pro-Khalistan protesters and Modi supporters gathered near the summit venue.
Khalistani Protesters Call for ‘Breaking India’
A group of Khalistani separatists staged a protest waving blue and yellow flags and chanting slogans like "Break India into pieces". Some demonstrators held posters of Modi behind bars, accusing him of involvement in the 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a designated terrorist by India but considered a Sikh community leader by his followers in Canada.
Protesters vowed to continue their demonstration until PM Modi departs from Canada.
Indian Diaspora Shows Strong Support
Meanwhile, large groups of Indian Canadians rallied in Modi’s support, waving Indian flags and welcoming his presence. Supporters emphasized that India is a major consumer market, and fostering economic ties with Canada should transcend political divisions.
“This visit is a sign of strategic diplomacy,” said one supporter. “Despite the Khalistani lobby’s opposition, Canadian PM Mark Carney understands the economic and geopolitical importance of engaging with India.”
Modi's 6th G7 Appearance, Focus on Energy & Tech
PM Modi is attending the G7 Summit 2025 at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. This is his sixth consecutive G7 appearance since 2019, underscoring India’s growing global influence.
During the summit, PM Modi is scheduled to:
-
Join an Outreach Session with other leaders.
-
Engage in bilateral meetings to discuss pressing global matters.
-
Focus on energy security, technological collaboration (AI, quantum computing), and global economic cooperation.
Hope for Improved Indo-Canadian Relations
Diplomatic tensions between India and Canada escalated in 2023 following allegations over Nijjar's killing. PM Modi’s current visit, under official invitation, signals a possible step towards resetting strained ties between the two nations.
