Janjgir-Champa:
In alignment with the vision of Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai and as part of the “Mor Gaon Mor Pani” (My Village, My Water) campaign, the district administration is implementing targeted efforts to promote water conservation and environmental sustainability. Acting on the directives of Collector Shri Janmejay Mahobe and under the guidance of District Panchayat CEO Shri Gokul Rawate, several initiatives under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) are being prioritized across the district.
One such initiative is currently underway in the Gosai Hills of Hedsapur Gram Panchayat, located in the Baloda development block. Here, the construction of Staggered Contour Trenches (SCTs) is in progress to address water conservation and land restoration. With an administrative approval of ₹6.46 lakh, a total of 2,050 contour trenches are being constructed under this project.
Contour trenching is a proven water conservation method, especially effective in sloped terrains. It involves digging horizontal trenches along equal elevation lines (contours) to capture rainwater, which then gradually percolates into the ground, recharging groundwater levels. These trenches prevent soil erosion, retain moisture, and promote greenery in the surrounding areas. The staggered design—meaning the trenches are built in a zigzag pattern with appropriate spacing—enhances water absorption and slows runoff, making the system more efficient.
The project is a key part of the “Mor Gaon Mor Pani” campaign, which aims to revive water sources and build water self-reliance in every village. The construction work is being carried out by local MGNREGA workers, providing much-needed employment to rural families.
This initiative is not just about job creation; it marks a significant step towards sustainable development and ecological balance in rural areas. By combining traditional conservation methods with modern implementation strategies, the project is setting an example of how environmental preservation and community empowerment can go hand in hand.
